The World is Pass/Fail

Pass Fail

A friend of mine, recently commented that we are so accustomed to evaluations in school represented by grades that it doesn’t always register, until after graduation, that in the end in the real world, we either make the grade or don’t. In other words, the world is Pass/Fail and not a report card grade that we can share with others. It is a black and white world in terms of the ultimate outcome.

On occasion, students ask me how many pages a report needs to be to get a good grade? Or, what is the minimum they need to do to get a passing grade? I tell them that that should not be their measure of success. They should strive to do their best no matter what the outcome.

The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short, but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark.                     – Michelangelo
